Leo Shusterman M.Ed

Mr. Shusterman's passion for math and education started with the influence of his grandmother, who was a math teacher in the Soviet Union for 40 years. He has a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics and a master’s degree in Curriculum and Instruction, both earned from the University of Texas at San Antonio. His professional experience includes teaching math at the collegiate level, and for the last 7 years, teaching high school math ranging from all the subjects such as Geometry, Algebra II, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus AB/BC. While pursing his master's degree, he tutored students at the Sylvan Learning Center on a variety of topics including the SAT. When Mr. Shusterman is not teaching he loves watching and playing baseball and football, collecting sports cards, and most importantly spending time with the 2 girls in his life, his wife Victoria and daughter Evie.

Crystal Calvo

Mrs. Calvo has been passionate about math ever since she was a child. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Mathematics Education from Hofstra University in New York, and has excelled as a classroom teacher for 16 years teaching Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Precalculus. Additionally, she has been a private tutor for 20 years teaching math to all grade levels. Mrs. Calvo loves to see her students grow and learn to enjoy math as much as she does. In her eyes, math is like trying to complete a challenging puzzle and putting the pieces in place to arrive at a correct answer.

In her free time, she is an enthusiastic traveler who enjoys meeting new people, trying different foods, and listening to music from all cultures. She also enjoys exercising, hiking, cooking, and taking her 3 children to state parks to explore and appreciate nature's beauty.

FAQs

  • The rate for math tutoring is $70 per hour.

    You will also be billed up to 45 minutes of prep time (sometimes less) for tutors to review the student’s assignment prior to each session. This ensures our tutors have a chance to review all of the questions and make detailed notes in advanced, ensuring a smooth and efficient tutoring session. Prep time will be logged in the student's file which you have access to, so there are no surprises. Our math tutors are very experienced in all math subject areas, so prep time is not extensive.

  • Students will email any homework assignments or study materials to their tutor at least 48 hours prior to the scheduled session. Your assigned tutor will do a thorough review and make detailed notes in advance in order to have a smooth and efficient tutoring session.

  • Our tutoring occurs via video conferencing (Zoom, Google Meet, etc). To maximize student engagement and retention, our teaching philosophy emphasizes student-led instruction, which promotes a consistent back-and-forth dialogue between student and tutor. We do our best to minimize traditional lecture. We also require cameras to be on and screens be shared.

  • Your tutor will provide you with a booking link that is connected to his/her calendar. Whenever you want to schedule a session, just click on the scheduling link and choose an available day/time that works best for you! No need for back an forth emailing or texting.

  • Struggling with the current chapter in class? Book multiple sessions in a short period of time so you don’t fall behind. Doing well in class and feeling confident? In that case, there’s no obligation to schedule sessions. It’s entirely up to you! We have no contracts, giving you the ultimate freedom and flexibility to schedule sessions. You may rest assured knowing we are here whenever you need us. Sessions are typically 60 minutes, but you can meet with your tutor as long as you need to cover the material.
