Florida Bright Futures Scholarship is Changing
Florida's Bright Futures Scholarship program is changing, which will affect the high school Class of 2026 and beyond. Here's what you need to know.
Revised Requirements:
The Florida Legislature has recently approved changes to the Bright Futures Scholarship requirements, lowering the eligibility criteria for students graduating in 2026 and later.
Florida Academic Scholars (FAS)
Covers 100% of tuition and fees:
SAT Score: Reduced from 1330 to 1300
ACT Score: Reduced from 29 to 28
CLT Score: Reduced from 96 to 95
GPA Requirement: Remains unchanged at 3.5 weighted
Florida Medallion Scholars (FMS)
Covers 75% of tuition and fees:
SAT Score: Reduced from 1200 to 1180
ACT Score: Reduced from 26 to 25
CLT Score: Reduced from 84 to 82
GPA Requirement: Remains unchanged at 3.0 weighted
Reasoning Behind the Changes:
The Florida Legislature approved these changes to make the scholarship more accessible to a wider range of students. The adjustment in test score requirements is due to the threshold percentiles required by Florida and corresponding national test percentile drop.
It's crucial to understand that while the requirements have been "softened" slightly, this does not necessarily mean they are easier to achieve. The changes reflect a response to lower overall performance on standardized tests rather than a deliberate easing of standards.
Impact on Students:
This change is significant for several reasons:
Increased Accessibility: More students will now have the opportunity to qualify for these scholarships.
Reduced Pressure: The lower test score requirements may alleviate some of the stress associated with standardized testing.
Financial Benefits: With more students potentially qualifying, families may see reduced college costs.
Next Steps:
Evaluate Your Current Standing: Assess where you are in relation to the new requirements.
Plan Ahead: If you're in the class of 2026 or later, start preparing early to meet these criteria.
